Commissioner Welcomes New Expenses Mandate - September 16, 2009

The proposed Public Sector Expenses Review Act, 2009, will expand the mandate of the Office of the Integrity Commissioner of Ontario.

“This Office has several mandates, all of which share a common theme of accountability,” said Acting Integrity Commissioner Lynn Morrison.

“This Office has cooperated with the Government in preparing for the oversight of the expenses of senior officials at 22 of the province’s largest agencies. We welcome this opportunity to continue our work in fostering a culture of integrity in the provincial Government.

“I look forward to meeting soon with representatives of all of the agencies as we learn about their procedures, and build a new framework for the review of their expenses,” said Commissioner Morrison.

This proposed new mandate builds on work the Office has done for the past seven years. Since 2002, the Integrity Commissioner has been reviewing the expenses of Cabinet Ministers, Opposition Leaders, and political staff.

The Office of the Integrity Commissioner is responsible for five key areas:
- Members’ Integrity
- Public service disclosure of wrongdoing (whistle-blowing)
- Review of Ministers’ and Opposition Leaders’ expenses
- Ministers’ staff ethical conduct
- Lobbyist registration

An Officer of the Legislative Assembly, the Integrity Commissioner is independent of government.
